Creative & Therapeutic Techniques for Working with Children and Teenagers Online (CPD)

This is an online CPD course in which you will be taught techniques and skills used for counselling children and teenagers. The online curriculum consists of 5 recorded classroom Zoom sessions, four Powerpoint presentations with links to numerous resources and demonstration videos. PDF downloads of the slideshares, and several other modules to read. All course details are given below after the enrolment process is explained.


You will have 180 days to complete the course from your enrolment date. The online course constitues 25 CPD hours

Curriculum

• Welcome & Introduction
• Why do kids and teens need therapy?
• What issues can therapy help kids and teens with?
• How kids and teens learn by doing and being creative?
• Aim to be PACEful when talking to a kid or teen


Creative Techniques to work with Kids up to the age of 11:

  • Creative grounding techniques including controlled breathing, artwork & ball exercise
  • Thoughts – Mind Magic – Child Mindfulness exercise to calm the mind
  • Feelings Candyland Game – Creative exercise for talking about and identifying emotions
  • Create and spin the wheel of coping skills!
  • Sand Tray Therapy – building a “Safe World” Exercise for all ages – to create scenes as projections of their inner experience, wishes, feelings, and/or past, present and future situations in their lives. Some therapists use sand trays to assess clients’ process, emotional feel, and functional age.
  • Magic Button Bear for processing negative thoughts, feelings and memories through surrogate tapping
  • Easy EMDR for Children using Finger Puppets and Wands for processing negative thoughts, feelings and memories

Creative Techniques to work with Teens:

  • Creative grounding techniques for Anxiety and Panic Attacks
  • Using Safe Place imagery and Storyboards to help for client to go deeper
  • Using fairytales in Therapy – discovering different parts
  • Helping teenagers talk about their lives using cards
  • Exploring anger and healthy options for moving forward using cards
  • Using Uno Game to identify copying skills
  • CBT Game – Problem Solving
  • Self-Injury vs self-healing journaling exercise
  • Body Image Exercise using pictures and writing
  • Creating a CD Cover Self-Esteem Exercise – “10 things I like about me” with music
  • Using Jenga Game to talk about Self-Image
  • Create a Transition Object / Book to provide psychological comfort
  • Metaphor Guided Meditation – suitable for all ages and inner child
